Namibia is the driest country in sub-Saharan Africa.
It is inhabited by the San, Damara and Nama. Around the 14th century, Bantu arrived in the country as a result of the spread of Bantu. Since then, the Bandu groups, one of which is known as Obambo, have dominated the country's population since the late 19th century.
Since 1948, with the National Party in power, South Africa has pursued an apartheid policy, which has also been implemented in South West Africa.
It became independent from South Africa in 1990, but Wolves Bay and the Penguin Islands remained in South Africa until 1994. Before, it was a German colony and was called German Southwest Africa.
The president of the country is Hage Geingbomb.
In the late 20th century, uprisings and demands for political representation by African political activists resulted in the immediate taking of responsibility by the UN
in 1966, but South Africa retained de facto control of the region. In 1973, the United Nations recognized the South West African People's Organization as the official representative of the people of Namibia. The party was dominated by the Obamos, the region's main ethnic group. Following an ongoing guerrilla war, South Africa established internal governance in Namibia in 1985.
Namibia has a population of 2.5 million and a stable multi-party parliamentary democracy.
Agriculture, livestock, tourism and mining - such as diamond, uranium, gold, silver and minerals - form the basis of the country's economy.
The arid, vast Namibian desert makes Namibia one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world.
